News 12 The Bronx Celebrates 10 Years Of Local News Coverage
News 12 the Bronx is celebrating 10 years as the first 24-hour local news channel completely dedicated to covering news of the Bronx. The cable-exclusive channel began bringing local news to the borough of the Bronx in 1998. Ten years later, News 12 continues to serve the Bronx community with its 24-hour news channel, and has expanded to multiple distribution platforms including an on-demand channel (News 12 Interactive, channel 612 on iO TV), a cell phone service (News 12 to Go), and on the world-wide-web (www.news12.com). All services are provided at no additional cost to Cablevision subscribers.
"It was a very easy decision to start up a News 12 franchise in the Bronx," said Patrick Dolan, President of News 12 Networks. "It was clear that Bronx residents were interested in news coverage that reflected the borough they were so proud to call their own. Most news coverage in the area up to that point was focused on crime stories. When News 12 the Bronx launched and showed the real people of the Bronx on television - from the teachers to the firemen to the community leaders and more - we were embraced. We're proud of our involvement in this incredible area."

Graffiti Artists, Kings of Walls, Now Dress Windows
Biz Markie’s “Just A Friend” from 1989 echoed through Tats Cru’s South Bronx studio, where a hazy cloud of spray paint hung in the air. As the grafffiti artists worked on a mural, they’d stop, lean back to gauge their progress, and then lean in close to do fills and lines.
Now after years of doing walls, they are finally doing windows. Next month their graffiti paintings will be the backdrop to Lord & Taylor’s windows along Fifth Avenue, following in the footsteps of other artists like Red Grooms and Larry Rivers whose work has appeared at the flagship store.

Remembering a Bronx 9/11 Mural
Commentary
I shot this photo in 2005, shortly after I returned to live in the Bronx. This mural on East 144 was up until recently. It has quietly been removed with white paint.
I don't believe this would have been removed so easily from another neighborhood in the Bronx or elsewhere in the city. I know people would have been upset and vocal if a September 11 mural in their neighborhood was removed. But this mural in the South Bronx was erased. Just like that.
This was a mural in tribute to September 11 victims and heroes. Meanwhile, a neighboring mural of a memorial of a woman who died (not related to 9/11) was also removed with the white paint.
I guess it is not cool to remember our dead on South Bronx walls anymore. The South Bronx wants to project another image.
But erasing the September 11 mural? I think this one should have remained as a tribute.
I miss it.

Health Dept. Launches Bronx HIV Testing Initiative
Our Salud
Hundreds of Community Leaders, Health Professionals and Elected Officials Mount a Campaign to Ensure that All Bronx Adults Know their HIV Status within Three Years
Tomorrow, on National HIV Testing Day, the Health Department will launch the largest HIV testing initiative in New York City history. The goal: to have all Bronx residents between the ages of 18 and 64 learn their HIV status within the next three years. With the help of local groups, faith-based organizations, and doctors’ offices, the new campaign – “The Bronx Knows”– will strive to reach the 250,000 Bronx adults who have never been tested. Hundreds of community partners will attend the event at the New York Botanical Garden tomorrow in the Bronx to pledge their support for the effort.
The Bronx has led the way on HIV testing in New York City, with the highest testing rate of all boroughs. Seven out of 10 Bronx adults (69%) have been tested at some point in their lives, compared with 64% in Manhattan and 56% in Brooklyn. HIV testing saves lives and prevents the spread of the infection by enabling HIV-positive people to get the care they need and take steps to protect their partners.
Like other boroughs, the Bronx has been hit hard by the HIV epidemic. Bronx residents account for nearly a fourth of New York City’s HIV infections and a third of AIDS deaths each year. Among Bronx residents who tested positive in 2006, more than a quarter were already sick with AIDS by the time they learned they had HIV. These individuals had likely been infected for nearly a decade but had never been diagnosed – meaning they missed opportunities for timely treatment and may have unwittingly passed the virus to others over time.

Puerto Rican Sun is a Bronx Gem
Commentary
Puerto Rican Sun is on 156th Street and Fox Avenue in the Bronx. It is too bad that there is no sign with the name of this piece of public art or the artist who did it. That's a real shame because this is a piece of history in the Bronx. This steel sculpture of palm trees and the sun is by boricua artist Rafael Ferrer. Something should be done to better preserve this artwork that dates to 1979 and to better inform residents and visitors about its significance in the Bronx. Visitors just see this giant artwork, and there's no information posted. The Fox playground could be better kept too actually.
For more info. on the Puerto Rican sculpture, check out this link with some of the history

Carrion Inducts the 'Best of the Bronx' at Walk of Fame
Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion inducted Hip Hop Pioneer GrandMaster Caz, 60’s Doo-wop sensations Larry Chance and the Earls, originators of break dance The Rock Steady Crew, and CSI Miami’s Adam Rodriguez into the Walk of Fame 2008 on Sunday. America’s favorite therapist Dr. Ruth was inducted as the first honorary member "for her meaningful roots in the Bronx community" (even though she was not born or has never lived in the Bronx).
As it is the tradition, the inductees were present for the unveiling permanent plaques carrying their names along the Grand Concourse. The event was a highlight of Bronx Day, the final day of Bronx Week, the annual tradition celebrating the best of The Bronx.
Other highlights of the day included the traditional Bronx Day Parade and a Food & Art Festival, one of the borough’s most popular annual street festivals. The day ended with Bronx Week Concert musical performances by Hip Hop legends Nice-n-Smooth and Nina Sky.

Check out 'Independent Sources' on CUNY-TV
La Voz Hispana, a local newspaper, recently wrote an article about Mike Amadeo. Here, Amadeo, who runs the popular Casa Amadeo record shop on Prospect Avenue in the South Bronx, is given a copy of the newspaper to check out the story. His shop has a space set aside for community residents to pick up La Voz Hispana, a free community newspaper.
As a consumer, Amadeo prefers to get his news on radio. He also enjoys listening to news from Puerto Rico on WAPA America via his cable provider because it is news directly from the island.
Amadeo talks to "Independent Sources," a new show on CUNY-TV focusing on the ethnic media. The show premiered on Wednesday night and takes a look at how people from different communities use independent sources, including Asian, Jewish and Latino independent newspaper and other media outlets.
To watch, tune in at 8 p.m. tonight or 10 a.m. tomorrow on Channel 75, NYC.
I was also interviewed for the show representing Puerto Rico Sun and Bronx Latino, independent online media projects. -- Clarisel Gonzalez

Writing on the Wall
Opinion
The writing on the wall to save St. Pius V School in the South Bronx was ignored. Parent and student prayers were not answered. Today was the last day of classes at the school after 95 years of service. The Archdiocese of New York decided to shut it down because of low enrollment.
With Mott Haven gentrifying, I wonder what this building will become.
Students will be attending a new school in September. Good luck and I hope you will never experience another school closing down on you.
I'm a Pius graduate and am saddened with the loss of this school. The Class of 2008 was the last class. Congratulations to those who graduated and sympathies to the students who will never graduate from Pius. -- Clarisel Gonzalez

OJO: South Bronx Gentrification
Commentary
The Bronx continues to be the poorest borough yet it is a hot borough for newcomers to come to live.
Instead of trying to improve the Bronx for the people who live here, politicians are just looking forward to those who want to move here: the gentrifiers.
Watch out South Bronx.
Look at what is happening in El Barrio and in Washington Heights. Look what happened at the Lower East Side.
It is sad to see that the people who remained in the South Bronx when others gave up on it will eventually be pushed out.
The only reason the Bronx is so hot now to newcomers is because Manhattan prices have gone up so high. Brooklyn prices too.
While I applaud developing and making the Bronx better, I know they are doing all this for the new people.
The Bronx is changing and Bronxites who are here should stand up to fight that these so called new development projects include them.
It seems everything is being done to push poor people out even in the city's poorest borough.
Gente, you fought to stay in the South Bronx when it was in rubbles and others gave up on it. Fight back now. Make sure that you are part of this so-called renaissance of the South Bronx or how some people are calling it "SoBro." -- Clarisel Gonzalez

Fight to Keep Fr. Grange at St. Jerome's
Father Grange celebrates Mass in honor of Our Lady of Providence, patroness of Puerto Rico, at St. Jerome's Church, the Bronx, last November. (photo by Clarisel Gonzalez)
Featured story
Parishioners fight to keep their beloved Father Grange at St. Jerome's. About 100 people rallied on a recent Sunday in support of their pastor, who is known for being outspoken against social injustice. The parishioners are sending a message to the archdiocese that they want to keep Father Grange at St. Jerome's, where he has served for many years and has become an important figure particularly in the Mexican immigrant community.
To read more about the parishioners fight, go to this article in the Daily News:
http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/bronx/2008/06/10/2008-06-10_rev_john_grange_has_fought_to_stay_with_.html
On a personal note, I sometimes go to St. Jerome's as a parishioner and have seen Father Grange at work. He is an important presence at the church. He is a grassroots kind of priest. It would be a mistake for the Archdiocese to remove him even if it is just a few blocks away. He is doing meaningful work in a largely Latino immigrant church that gets packed on Sundays and during services such as Christmas Eve Mass. Why mess with a good thing? -- Clarisel Gonzalez

THE FALL AND RISE
OF THE SOUTH BRONX
This look back at the successes and missteps of the Banana Kelly Community Development Association offers lessons for community organizers everywhere.
By Roberta Brandes Gratz
The Concept of Community: Lessons from the Bronx, by Harold DeRienzo, IPOCPress, $38.
Visiting the Longwood-Hunts Point neighborhood in the South Bronx today, it's hard to remember that only 30 years ago it looked like Dresden after the bombing, with abandonment the dominant characteristic. Today, a mix of new and old three- to eight-story apartment houses lines Kelly, Fox, Beck and Dawson Streets and Prospect Avenue. A once-empty school houses the thriving Banana Kelly High School, a lush green park is filled with trees showing solid age, and well-used playing fields occupy a vast space where rubble once dominated. The number of local businesses is increasing. Developer-built infill housing is scattered around. A beautifully restored elevated subway station anchors the district. And an ethnically and economically diverse population proudly calls the area home, a far cry from the day when departure was a universal goal.

Housing
Serrano Takes NYCHA to Task for 'Hoarding Empty Units while Thousands Need Housing'
Cites Daily News' report indicating one-fifth of East Harlem development remains empty
State Senator José M. Serrano (D-Manhattan-Bronx) today criticized the City of New York and the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) for "fully and completely casting the agency's mission to the wind by hoarding empty units while thousands need housing all across this City."
As reported in Friday's New York Daily News, an estimated one-fifth - or 265 of 1,299 units - at East Harlem's James Weldon Johnson Homes sit vacant. Senator Serrano represents East Harlem and the South Bronx, areas with some of the highest concentration of public housing in the city.
"There has never been a time in the City of New York when affordable housing was more essential," Senator Serrano said. "More than 100,000 families are waiting in desperation on NYCHA's wait-list. It is unconscionable that we leave people, many of whom are children and seniors, without a decent and safe roof over their heads, while the dust settles in NYCHA's empty apartments."
In July of 2006, the City Comptroller's office reported that NYCHA was "warehousing vacant apartments" for an average of 40 months before making necessary renovations and allowing a new families to move in, thereby placing the unit back on rent rolls.
Facilities are underutilized across the City, with 6,500 units off the rent rolls. In some instances, entire floors of NYCHA buildings have been closed to tenants and have fallen into disrepair. The extent of that disrepair, including potential water damage and infestation, places entire buildings at risk.
"Should the City continue to neglect NYCHA properties, this once historic investment in public housing will be lost at a time when we can least afford it."
The Senator, who has emerged as one of Albany's most vocal advocates on behalf of public housing residents, has committed himself to strong and steady engagement with tenant associations across the district. His efforts have focused on everything from the state budget to on-the-ground customer service.
Earlier this year, the Senator sent a letter to NYCHA Chairman Tino Hernandez lamenting the poor treatment of residents, and a lack of bilingual management staff in areas with a high percentage of Spanish-speaking residents.
In that letter, he stated "that a deficit of money need not translate into a deficit of customer service, care and decorum. Residents of public housing deserve to be treated with the respect and consideration that is due all people in New York City, regardless of their economic status."

CHANGING NYC: Bronx is changing, with artists leading way
NEW YORK - For decades, the Bronx had a bad reputation.
Howard Cosell intoned, "Ladies and gentleman, the Bronx is burning," in 1977. Ten years later, Tom Wolfe picked the borough as the site of the hit-and-run accident that led to the downfall of rich, white bond trader Sherman McCoy in "The Bonfire of the Vanities."
Over the years redevelopment has proceeded in fits and starts, with the Bronx often hailed as the next hot area.
It hasn't quite happened yet _ the Bronx still has too many vacant lots and auto-body shops to be a yuppie paradise _ but many Bronx neighborhoods are undergoing a significant transformation.

Spotlight: Entrepreneur Nestor Rentas

Nestor Rentas proudly carries Puerto Rican flags at his Taino Mayor boricua store at 855 East Tremont Avenue. This store is reminiscent of Puerto Rico accessory shops on the island. While customers shop at Taino Mayor, they could enjoy the sounds of songs like "En Mi Viejo San Juan" and "Soñando con Puerto Rico" playing. Rentas is keeping culture alive in the Bronx, and this week is a busy one at Taino Mayor because of Sunday's National Puerto Rican Day Parade. Rentas says people come from all over looking for Puerto Rico items. His shop sells everything Puerto Rico, including flag earrings, hats, souvenirs from the island, music by boricua and Latino artists and musical instruments.
Rentas is a local Bronx celebrity. He has a popular TV show on Bronxnet, a local community media outlet, named "Mi Pueblo es Tu Pueblo." He says his show is one of the oldest on Bronxnet. -- Clarisel Gonzalez
