On the Census
Statement from the Bronx BP:
I am disturbed by media reports indicating that, so far, only six percent of Bronx residents have returned the 2010 Census questionnaire. I cannot stress this enough, if we do not count, we will miss out. It’s only ten questions, and it takes only ten minutes. The census results play a major role in deciding how much funding is made available to programs in our borough. Bronxites, please fill out the form and send it back before April 15th . It’s our responsibility, stand up and be counted! -- Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.

Technology
Grant Supports the Launch of Group’s Digital Literacy Institute
The Verizon Foundation has awarded a $10,000 grant to the Eagle Academy for Young Men in support of the group’s Digital Literacy Institute.
The Digital Literacy Institute is a training program that provides skills to students to assist their parents with technical knowledge, so they will be more comfortable with computers and positioned to play a more active role in their child’s education.
Students teaching parents is a new learning approach that aims to provide parents with basic skills to tackle Internet research, Basic Microsoft Office, social networking and Internet safety. Parents attending the academy will also gain valuable computer skills which can improve their marketability in the work force.
April Horton, Verizon director of government and external affairs, said, “The Eagle Academy’s program helps build a stronger support structure for its students’ education, while giving the parents technology skills that will help them in all aspects of their lives.”
David Banks, principal of Eagle Academy, said: “A young man without a mentor is like an explorer without a map. We must all commit to saving our sons. When we save our sons we save ourselves.”
The Verizon Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Verizon Communications, supports the advancement of literacy and K-12 education through its free educational Web site, Verizon Thinkfinity (www.thinkfinity.org), and fosters awareness and prevention of domestic violence. In 2009, the Verizon Foundation awarded $67.9 million in grants to nonprofit agencies in the U.S. and abroad. For more information on the foundation, visit www.verizonfoundation.org.

Spotlight: The Bronx photo group
One of my favorite Bronx photo sites is one I founded and still have the pleasure of administering at flickr.
This group has more than 500 members and more than 9,100 in the group pool, showcasing the many faces of the Bronx. It has a wide collection of Bronx images from a diverse group of flickr members. To view this group

VOCES: Blue Was Never My Color, Anyway!

Panel Discussion
VOCES: Blue Was Never My Color, Anyway!
Wednesday, March 10, 6:30 – 8:30 pm, El CafĆ©
From 2008-2009 Bronx artist Blanka Amezkua invited a New York based artist to show work in her bedroom for the duration of one month. It was called the Bronx Blue Bedroom Project (BBBP). During their show, each featured artist was asked to cook a meal or conduct a workshop based on the work they were exhibiting. Accompanied by guest curators and featured BBBP artists, we will discuss how showing in a bedroom in the South Bronx influenced their artistic practice and talk about the current local art scene.
Admission: FREE
El Museo del Barrio
1230 Fifth Avenue at 104th Street
New York, NY 10029
www.elmuseo.org
PS: I assure you the evening will not be an extensive account about the project but rather a discussion to collectively reflect on ways that we can transform what we want to see culturally around us. Not only through the art we do but also through the collaborations/projects we create with other artists and non-artists. I know that many BBBP artists have amazing projects of their own to share... And if you attended any of the openings, Bronx Council on the Arts Trolley nights, meals or workshops, or just visited BBBP on any random day we would love to share this evening with you; without you BBBP would not have been the unforgettable experience it became. So I hope you come on March 10 at El Museo to jointly celebrate it all!
Abrazos,
Blanka Amezkua
