CROTONA EAST MERCHANTS PROMOTE SMALL BUSINESSES THROUGH THANKSGIVING SALE
Business
Seventeen merchants along Southern Boulevard between E. 174th Street and Westchester Avenue will kick off a Thanksgiving Sale and Raffle Event starting on November 20th. On November 26th, Black Friday, there will be a unique multi-store “roving” raffle, where prizes will be given away at different store locations every 30 minutes.
This exciting sale and roving raffle event is one way in which Southern Boulevard business owners are giving back to their community. Sales circular coupons and raffle entry cards are being distributed at participating stores, listed further below.
The Southern Boulevard Thanksgiving Week promotional event is part of a broader effort to promote economic development and support small businesses in Crotona East/Morrisania. In 2009, the Women’s Housing and Economic Development Corporation (WHEDco), a Bronx-based non-profit community organization, built an award-winning 128-unit Energy Star certified affordable housing development. Their Intervale Green development brought 380 new residents to the neighborhood who, along with long-time area residents, can play an important role in keeping local businesses open.
As stated by Kerry A. McLean, WHEDco’s Community Development Project Manager, “As new developments are being built, it is important that residents can buy what they need, including groceries, clothing and services, in their own neighborhoods. At the same time, this is a crucial engine to bring income to small businesses, helping them remain open, expand and create new jobs in the community.”
The Southern Boulevard Thanksgiving Sale demonstrates an increased momentum among Crotona East small businesses who want their shopping district to one day match that of other popular shopping destinations.
Businessman JB Ceesay of JB Collection clothing store states, "I don't mind giving discounts and prizes, because when customers come in to pick up one item, I know they might keep coming back."
The Southern Boulevard Thanksgiving Sale and Raffle Event is being sponsored by 15 members of the growing Southern Boulevard Merchant Association, in collaboration with WHEDco. Shop locally and win prizes at participating Southern Boulevard stores between 174th Street and Westchester Avenue this Thanksgiving season:

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED at PAL centers in the Bx
Help Make a Difference in the Lives of Bronx Youngsters
The Police Athletic League (PAL) is looking for volunteers to continue its mission of serving New York City ’s young people by donating their time and talents to help serve Bronx youngsters at PAL’s Webster-Giannone Center serving Fordham and Tremont, PS 48 in Hunts Point and PAL’s New South Bronx Center .
PAL Centers in the Bronx offer a wide range of opportunities for volunteers of all talents. Volunteers are needed to tutor and mentor young people during the After School Program’s daily homework help sessions. In addition, individuals can also donate their time assisting the many special events held at PAL’s Centers throughout the year. PAL is also seeking professionals to give career advice and talk about their own careers to young people, as well as guest speakers who can share information on a specific hobby of interest to the youngsters.
In 1914, Police Commissioner Arthur Woods began a social movement that would eventually be known as the Police Athletic League (PAL). He organized a city-wide search for vacant lots to be converted into safe places for New York City children to play, helping to also reduce tensions between police officers and youth. Today, PAL serves over 56,000 children in full-time and part-time centers, summer day camps, summer Play Streets and community-based sports programs, in addition to Cops & Kids Programs throughout New York City ’s five boroughs.
To become a volunteer with the Police Athletic League or to learn more about volunteer opportunities, please visit www.palnyc.org and click on Get Involved under the “About Us” tab for an application. Volunteers will go through an application process that includes an interview, screening and an orientation. For more information, please contact PAL’s Volunteer Coordinator, Alexandria Sumpter-Delves, at (212) 477-9450 ext. 390 or volunteer(at)palnyc.org.
New York City ’s Police Athletic League is the first, largest and finest civilian-run PAL in
the country. Founded in 1914, PAL has served New York City ’s young people for 96 years. PAL provides recreational, educational, cultural and social activities to over 56,000 boys and girls annually. It is also the city’s largest, independent, nonprofit youth organization. For more information, please visit www.palnyc.org.
